Task 8 - Analysis of Music Videos (2)

The second music video that I am going to be analysing is for Charlie Puth's song 'One Call Away'.

This music video is from the genre of pop. A typical video from the pop music genre is usually set somewhere bright and sunny with a group of people in it who are shown to be having a good time together. This is evident throughout the video as people are shown to be happy at various points in the video. One example of this is right at the beginning when a girl hears Charlie Puth playing the piano before she puts her headphones on.

There is a clear relationship between the lyrics and visuals in this video. A lyric that is sang is "call me, baby, if you need a friend". This lyric is represented in the video by Charlie sitting in a class with his friend and smiling when the girl he likes walks in and sits down. This hints to the audience that even if he did not date the girl he likes, then the two of them would be still be friends and would therefore still be in each other's lives.

As well as the lyrics, there is also a clear relationship between the music and the visuals. The video is edited so that it cuts with the beat. An example of this is when Charlie is in class then, the video cuts to him at his job in the cinema with a film reel and then quickly cuts back to him sat at the piano.

There is an instrumental section of music right at the beginning of the video when a piano can solely be heard. This is illustrated in the video as Charlie is shown playing the piano on his own at the beginning of the video.

Throughout the video, there are close-ups of the artist. These close-ups give the audience the impression that the artist is lovesick and wants to be able to be with the girl he likes.
The record company wants to give the impression to the audience that the track is about a young man who wants to be with a girl he likes and will be there for her. This creates an impression that the artist is a good person who wants to be with a girl he likes. Therefore, an innocent persona of the artist is created.

Some examples of close-ups used during the video.

In one section of the video, there is a reference to looking as Charlie Puth is shown looking at the social media profile of the girl he likes on his laptop. This feature has been chosen because it tells the audience that he is looking on the girl's social media page to find out what she likes. This hints that he would do anything to go out with the girl he likes and this includes trying to like things that she likes.

In this video, about three quarters of it is narrative based. The narrative follows the artist who plays a young man who likes a girl but she has a boyfriend. There is also some performance in this video which is Charlie sat at the piano singing and him leaning against a wall singing.

Performance in video                                                                                                 Narrative in video

In conclusion, this video is not a typical pop video as it does feature people who look happy and look like they are having a good time, however, the video mostly takes place in dark locations, for example, a cinema and a theatre. Therefore, this video does not have all of the usual conventions of a pop music video.
