Task 8 - Analysis of Music Videos (4)

The fourth music video that I am going to be analysing is 'Here' by Alessia Cara.

This video for 'Here' by Alessia Cara is not a typical pop music video as it is set at a house party at night. The setting is quite dark and does not fit the conventions of a stereotypical pop music video, which would normally be set on a place like a beach, for example. There are, however, people shown to be having a good time in the video. This is a feature of a typical pop music video.

There is a relationship in this video between the lyrics and the visuals. Alessia sings a line which says "Who don't even care about my well being". The image on screen is of Alessia in a corner of a room at a house party by herself. There are some other people around but they look as if they are ignoring her. The reveals to the audience that she feels alone at the party and the visuals clearly show this.

"Who don't even care about my well being".

As well as the lyrics, there is also a clear relationship between the music and the visuals. At one point in the video, the camera pans from one shot of Alessia to another shot of her on the other side of the room. The camera pans on a loud musical note.

                                              Camera pans on musical note.

                                                                                                    Close-up of Alessia.
There are several close-ups of the artist in this video. This is Alessia Cara's first music video so the record company could have wanted to show that she is going to have a long career ahead of her. Another reason why there are so many close-ups of Alessia is that, in the video, she is at a party and feels uncomfortable. So, having a lot of close-ups on her means that her discomfort is visible to the audience.
                                                                                     Narrative and performance.
In this video, the narrative and performance are intertwined. The video follows Alessia as she goes to a house party that she feels very uncomfortable at. The video shows people having fun in different social situations and shows Alessia's discomfort at being around these people. For the performance part of the video, Alessia can be seen going through the different rooms of the house singing by herself. This tells the audience that she would rather be by herself at home than at the house party.

In conclusion, this video is not a stereotypical pop video. This video is set in a house party which is very poorly lit. Although the video does show people having a good time and this fits with the typical conventions of a pop video, Alessia herself is shown to be having a bad time. Therefore, the video cannot be classed as a stereotypical pop music video.
