Filming for First Draft

The filming for the first draft of the music video took place on 1st October 2016.

My brother Jonny came round to my house and we filmed in many areas around the house including the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, the bedroom, the drive and the garden.

Jonny was wearing casual clothes in the majority of the shots of the music video. These casual clothes were a light colour on purpose as they show that he was happy that he had left his girlfriend. In a flashback where Jonny was angry, he is shown to be wearing dark clothes. The dark colours of the clothes show that Jonny is upset in the flashback and is a clear contrast to the light colours that he is wearing in the majority of the video.

One problem I had with filming was the amount of time that my bother could spare. As my brother had plans for later on in the day, I had to make sure that I stuck to the schedule I created so that the filming for the video could remain on track. This succeeded and each of the shots were filmed swiftly but to a good standard.

Choosing a Font

In this section of the blog, I am going to be picking a font that could be used on the digipak and the magazine advert for the artist. This font needs to reflect the theme of the album, which is love and heartache. The font also needs to reflect the artist and the genre that their music is part of. The genre that the artist is part of is pop.
(All of the following fonts are from DaFont.com)

Font #1:

This first font is called 'Hello Causal'. I like this font as it is bold and can be seen easily. I also think that it reflects the theme of the album which is love and heartache.

Font #2:

This font is called 'Endless Heartache'. I think this font also reflects the theme of the album. This is because it looks slightly broken, which is how the artist of the album feels about the break up that they discuss in their songs.

Font #3:

This font is called 'Hello Heartache'. I like this font because it can link to the theme of the album. However, I do not like this font because from some angles, it could be hard to read. This would be a disadvantage for the audience.

Task O - Original Images Before Manipulation - First Shoot

The photographs that are on the first drafts of the digipak and magazine advert are similar to the ones that will be used on the final draft of the magazine advert and digipak, however, they are not the final photographs. This is because my brother - who is going to be in the photographs - is not available this week. So, I have planned the layout of each of the ancillary texts without using the actual pictures that will be used in the final drafts.

Front cover:

An image similar to this will be on the front cover of the digipak. In the image that will be taken in the second shoot, the hands will be a bit further apart and will be against a background of clouds.

Back cover:

This image will be used on the final draft of the digipak. The track listing will go on the back cover, on top of this image.

Left cover:

I changed my mind about having another image of a pair of hands on the album and instead decided to have a close up of a guitar when the image of the hands would have been. In the second shoot, the close up of the guitar will be against a tree.

Cover inside:

This image will go on the inside cover of the digipak. In the second shoot, the actor that I am using as the artist will feature in this image and the shot will be taken in a park.

Left cover:

This image is going to go on the left cover of the digipak. In the second shoot, the actor that I am using as the artist will feature in this shot. This shot will also be against a backdrop of a park.

Problem With My Proposed Idea and Solution

In the pitch that I did of my music video idea, I said that I was going to film at my brother's house and that my brother and his girlfriend were going to be in the music video. Since the pitch, a problem has come about. The problem is that my brother's house is being decorated, so, I can not film there on the day that I intended to film on.
However, this is a solution. The solution is that I will film at my house. This solves the problem as it means that the filming will not be pushed back. Therefore, I will remain on schedule for my media coursework.

Task J - Location Recce Shots

The following shots are ones of where the filming of my music video will take place.

First Location: A driveway.
These shots show the driveway where the first shots of the music video will take place. I took the pictures from different angles to figure out how the location will look on camera when I film the shots for the music video.

Second Location: A bedroom.
This location will feature in shots after the shots taken on the driveway. In the video, the main character will be in the bedroom when she is unpacking her suitcase.

Third Location: A park.
This is the location where most of the filming of the music video will take place. After the first chorus, the majority of the music video takes place in this park. Some of the flashbacks will also take place here.

Task I - Costume Shots

These are some pictures that are from the Internet about what I want the costumes in the music video to look like.

Costume 1:

This outfit will be worn by the actor throughout the majority of the video. The light colours suggest a theme of optimism, which is the prominent theme throughout the music video.

Costume 2:

This will be worn in a flashback of when the actor in the music video was still in the relationship he has just left. The dark colours of the outfit suggest that the actor is angry. The shot that this costume will be present in has a theme of anger running through it.

Task H - Storyboard

Task G Part 2 - Draft of Each Ancillary Text Feedback

This is the feedback that has been given for my digipak draft and my magazine advert draft.

Task G - Draft of Each Ancillary Text With Photos Off the Internet to Plan What Kind of Photography is Needed

Draft of Digipak:

This draft of my digipak is to show what it could like if I use this type of photography.
I like the pictures of the sets of hands as it looks as if they are letting go of one another. The close up of the hands is something that I would like to incorporate into my digipak. I like the shots of the young man with the guitar as in both pictures he looks as if he is daydreaming, possibly about his ex-girlfriend. I like how the shots manage to capture the essence of that.
On the back cover, as well as the track listing, there will also be a bar-code, the record company logo and some extra details about the album and artist. This will appear on the final draft of the digipak.

Magazine Advert:

This is the draft of my magazine advert. This draft shows me where the pictures and text will go once the advert is finished. The shot used is also used on the inside cover of the album and shows a young man with a guitar, daydreaming. I used this shot as it conveys what the theme of the album is and that is a mixture of love and heartache. There is also a small image of the front of the digipak on the advert. This is to show the audience that there is a relationship between the advert and the digipak.

Task F Part 2 - Hand Drawn Digipak and Magazine Ad Feedback

After creating the mock ups of the digipak and magazine advert, I asked people to give their opinions on both of them. In this part of the blog, I have recorded their opinions.

Digipak:

For the mock up of the digipak, I was given a mixture of positive feedback and constructive criticism.

Positive feedback:
  • 'I like how there are pictures in the digipak both of the artist and of things relating to the theme of the album.'
  • 'Variety is shown because you have a range of different pictures in the digipak.'
  • 'I like how you have a picture relating to the theme of the album on the front cover. This will tell the audience the mood of the album before they even open it.
Constructive criticism:
  • 'It would have been more clear of the mood of the album if you had done a quick sketch of the type of picture you wanted to go on the front.'
  • 'It would maybe be better to have a picture of the artist on the front of the album. That way, the audience can tell whose album it is that they are buying straight away.'
  • 'You could have listed the tracks on the back of the mock up instead of just writing track listing as it would have made the mock up look a bit more organised.'
Magazine Advert:

For the magazine advert, I was given a mixture of positive feedback and constructive criticism.

Positive feedback:
  • 'There is a clear layout on the advert. This makes the advert look organised.'
  • 'The name of the artist and album at the top of the advert is good as it tells the audience whose album it is.'
  • 'The picture of the artist is clear so it makes it clear to the audience whose album they could be going out to buy.'
Constructive criticism:
  • 'The magazine advert seems a bit bare. Maybe you should have a few more pictures of the artist on there to make it stand out a bit more.'
  • 'You could have made the tracks available on the album stand out a bit more so it is obvious to the audience which songs are on the album.'
  • 'You could maybe have put the name of the artist and album at the bottom of the advert so it is with the other information and so it looks a bit more organised.'

Task F - Hand Drawn Mock Up of Digipak and Magazine Ad

Digipak:

The song that I have chosen to feature in the music video - "I'm OK" by Olly Murs - is from his 2011 "In Case You Didn't Know". For a part of my coursework, I am tasked with creating a digipak for the album that my chosen track is from. This is  the hand drawn mock up of what the digipak would possibly look like.

The hand drawn mock up shows the measurements of the digipak and on what section of the digipak each component will go. These components of the digipak include the track listing of the album, the name of the album, the name of the artist, pictures of the artist and pictures that relate to the theme of the album.

Magazine Advert:

For my coursework, I am also tasked with making a magazine advert for the album that my chosen track is from. This is the hand drawn mock up of the magazine advert for the album. It features where each of the components will go on the magazine advert. The components of the magazine advert are the name of the album, the name of the artist, a picture of the artist, the artist's official website, examples of tracks available on the album and when the album is out.

Task E Part 2 - Music Video Pitch Feedback

Below is the positive and negative feedback that I was given for my pitch about my idea for the music video.

+ Positive
  • The flashback idea is good. It will be interesting for the audience to see the history of the main character's old relationship.
  • The use of different locations such as a house and a park.
  • The second idea (idea I am using) is better than the initial idea as it is more interesting.

- Negative
  • Think about the camera angles that are going to be used in the music video.
  • Think about how many coustume changes and how many hairstyles you are going to have if you are going to show the length of a relationship.
  • Make sure that the actors are happy to be on screen together.

Task E - Pitch of Music Video Idea

Powered by emaze
This is the PowerPoint that was used in class to pitch my idea for the music video.

Task D - Analysis of Song Lyrics

Below is a full analysis that was done of the lyrics of the track I have chosen to use in my music video. The track that I have chosen to use is 'I'm OK' by Olly Murs.
Doing an analysis of the lyrics helps me as I can figure out how the lyrics will link to the visuals of the music video.

Task B - Email to Record Company

To be able to use the track for the music video, I had to ask the record label that the artist of the track is signed to for permission. Below is a screenshot of the email that I have sent.

Task C - Mood Board

Below is the mood board that I have created. This mood board will provide me with inspiration as I go about creating my music video.
The mood board contains pictures that could inspire me for the location of the music video, the colours that could be used in the music video, the effects that could be used when it comes to the editing of the video and the emotions that could be shown throughout the music video.

Task A - Initial Ideas

I have produced a brainstorm that details the initial ideas that I could use for my music video. This brainstorm includes narratives that could possibly be used as well as camera angles and editing techniques that could be used.
