Evaluating Magazine Advert Feedback

Images - The general comments here are that the images had good lighting and variety of shots but there were too many close ups used. I agree with these comments and would take them on board if I were to produce the magazine advert again.

Location - The general comments on the location of the images on the magazine advert is that it is not very obvious and can be considered a positive as well as a negative. I agree with these comments and if I were to produce the magazine advert again then I would pick another location that better fitted with the album.

Colours - The general comments here are that the colours are effective as they link with the digipak. This shows that the colours are effective as it shows that there is a link between the digipak and the magazine that work to promote the album.

Font - The general comments here are that I could have used a bit more variety in the fonts used but that the font creates a link between the magazine advert and the digipak as I used the same font on both. I do believe that I could have used another font on the magazine advert, however, they the link between the digipak and the magazine advert would have been weakened.

Evaluating Digipak Feedback

Images - The general comments here are that the lighting and shots are effective however there needs to be a wider variety shots to make the digipak more engaging. I agree with these comments as it appears that I have used too many close ups. Using other shots would have made the digipak more engaging with the target audience.

Editing of images - The general comments here are the Photoshop skills that have been shown are good however they maybe need refining. I agree with this and if I were to work with Photoshop again, I would have watched some videos online that would have furthered my Photoshop skills.

Colours - The general comments here are that the blue of the digipak is engaging, but, the grey in comparison is boring. I agree with these comments and if I were to produce this digipak again, then I would continue the theme of blue all the way through to make it more engaging to the target audience.

Font - The general comments here are that the font needed to be larger to make the album stand out and that there needs to be a wider variety of fonts used. This would make the digipak even better and I agree with this as it would make the digipak more engaging to the audience.

Final Draft of Digipak - Full Product

This is the final draft of the digipak and shows the digipak in it's entirety.

The top half of the digipak is shown upside down as this is how it will look when the digipak is put together properly.

Final Draft of Digipak - Panel 6 - Back Cover

This panel is the back cover of the digipak. It shows the track listing of the album as well as the logos of the record company that I have created myself specifically for this task. The back cover also shows a barcode and some credits.

Final Draft of Digipak - Panel 5 - Left Cover

This panel of the digipak shows the other left cover. It displays a cloud background with a close up of a guitar over the top of it. The background of the close up of the guitar has been removed by photoshop.

Final Draft of Digipak - Panel 4 - Left Cover

This panel of the digipak is the first of the left covers. Much like the inside cover, it shows a photograph of a guitar and a notebook. On the notebook, other lyrics from the songs on the album are present.

Final Draft of Digipak - Panel 3 - Back Inside

This panel shows what the back inside cover of the digipak will look like. On this panel, there is a close up shot of a guitar and over the top of it, a black outline. This outline shows where the disc will sit in the digipak.

Final Draft of Digipak - Panel 2 - Cover Inside

This panel shows what the cover inside of the digipak will look like. This panel shows a picture of a guitar and a notebook. On the notebook, there is a lyric from each of the songs on the album. I chose to put the lyrics in a font which make it seem like they are actually written onto the paper and not just typed on the top of it.

Final Draft of Digipak - Panel 1 - Front Cover (and Spine)

This is the front cover of the digipak with a spine added onto the side of it. This panel of the digipak shows the name of the album and the name of the aritst. The picture on the front of the digipak is two hands reaching for each other, which shows the theme of the album clearly. These two pictures of hands were taken separately but then edited on Adobe Photoshop to make it look like the hands were reaching for each other.

Final Draft of Magazine Advert

Below is the final magazine advert that I have produced for the album 'In Case You Didn't Know' by Olly Murs.

When producing the final draft of the magazine advert, I followed the feedback that I gave myself for the second draft of the magazine advert. This final draft has examples of social media sites where the artist of the album can be found. The social media sites that I have included on my magazine advert have logos that have been created by me, specifically for this task.

The final draft of the magazine advert also includes more images that what were used on the first two drafts of the magazine advert. These images include different angles of the guitar.

Also, a new font has been included on the final draft of the magazine advert. This font is called 'Hello Casual' and is from the website www.dafont.com.

Second Draft of Magazine Advert

This is the second draft of my magazine advert. The changes that I have made to the magazine advert are based on the feedback that I gave myself for the first draft edit of the magazine advert.

For this second draft of the magazine advert, I have changed the font to make it stand out more against the blue background. I have also changed the tone of the photographs back to the natural tone so that they stand out more against the blue background.

To improve the second draft of this magazine advert, I think I need to add the logos of some social media sites where the artist can be found and change the font again so that it is unique and stands out from other magazine adverts.

First Draft of Digipak

I am happy with this first draft of the digipak as the colour of the digipak suits the theme of the album. I am also happy with the photography on the digipak.
However, when I do the next draft, I need to change the tone of the photographs as they do not match with the background colour of the digipak.

First Draft of Magazine Ad

Overall, I am happy with this first draft of the magazine advert. I like the colour of the background and the tone of the pictures as they fit with the theme of the album which is heartache.
One thing that needs to be improved on the magazine advert is the colour of the text and the font as it does not stand out enough against the background.

Editing Digipak Draft

The editing of the digipak took place on the week commencing 10th October 2016.
  • The first thing I did on this day was to open a digipak template ready to put all of the photographs I am using onto it, so that the first draft of the digipak can come together.
  • The next thing I did was to remove the background from the photograph of the guitar. I did this so that there would only be the guitar in the picture, and not the grey background. I then put this into the digipak template and put the manipulated picture of the guitar over the background of clouds.
  • The next thing I did was to put the cloud background on the back cover and front cover as there is a blue theme running throughout the album.
  • This is the digipak after half of the editing.

Editing of Music Video First Draft

Editing of the first draft took place on the week beginning 3rd October 2016 and ended on 7th October 2016.

When I edited the first draft, I worked quickly as I had to meet the deadline yet produce a good quality music video.

One of the problems that I had when editing the music video was that I need to use more complicated effects that I was used to using so that the music video needed to be interesting for the audience. The solution to this was that I watched online tutorials and these taught me how to create complicated effects that would interest the audience of the music video.

Filming for First Draft

The filming for the first draft of the music video took place on 1st October 2016.

My brother Jonny came round to my house and we filmed in many areas around the house including the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, the bedroom, the drive and the garden.

Jonny was wearing casual clothes in the majority of the shots of the music video. These casual clothes were a light colour on purpose as they show that he was happy that he had left his girlfriend. In a flashback where Jonny was angry, he is shown to be wearing dark clothes. The dark colours of the clothes show that Jonny is upset in the flashback and is a clear contrast to the light colours that he is wearing in the majority of the video.

One problem I had with filming was the amount of time that my bother could spare. As my brother had plans for later on in the day, I had to make sure that I stuck to the schedule I created so that the filming for the video could remain on track. This succeeded and each of the shots were filmed swiftly but to a good standard.

Choosing a Font

In this section of the blog, I am going to be picking a font that could be used on the digipak and the magazine advert for the artist. This font needs to reflect the theme of the album, which is love and heartache. The font also needs to reflect the artist and the genre that their music is part of. The genre that the artist is part of is pop.
(All of the following fonts are from DaFont.com)

Font #1:

This first font is called 'Hello Causal'. I like this font as it is bold and can be seen easily. I also think that it reflects the theme of the album which is love and heartache.

Font #2:

This font is called 'Endless Heartache'. I think this font also reflects the theme of the album. This is because it looks slightly broken, which is how the artist of the album feels about the break up that they discuss in their songs.

Font #3:

This font is called 'Hello Heartache'. I like this font because it can link to the theme of the album. However, I do not like this font because from some angles, it could be hard to read. This would be a disadvantage for the audience.

Task O - Original Images Before Manipulation - First Shoot

The photographs that are on the first drafts of the digipak and magazine advert are similar to the ones that will be used on the final draft of the magazine advert and digipak, however, they are not the final photographs. This is because my brother - who is going to be in the photographs - is not available this week. So, I have planned the layout of each of the ancillary texts without using the actual pictures that will be used in the final drafts.

Front cover:

An image similar to this will be on the front cover of the digipak. In the image that will be taken in the second shoot, the hands will be a bit further apart and will be against a background of clouds.

Back cover:

This image will be used on the final draft of the digipak. The track listing will go on the back cover, on top of this image.

Left cover:

I changed my mind about having another image of a pair of hands on the album and instead decided to have a close up of a guitar when the image of the hands would have been. In the second shoot, the close up of the guitar will be against a tree.

Cover inside:

This image will go on the inside cover of the digipak. In the second shoot, the actor that I am using as the artist will feature in this image and the shot will be taken in a park.

Left cover:

This image is going to go on the left cover of the digipak. In the second shoot, the actor that I am using as the artist will feature in this shot. This shot will also be against a backdrop of a park.

Problem With My Proposed Idea and Solution

In the pitch that I did of my music video idea, I said that I was going to film at my brother's house and that my brother and his girlfriend were going to be in the music video. Since the pitch, a problem has come about. The problem is that my brother's house is being decorated, so, I can not film there on the day that I intended to film on.
However, this is a solution. The solution is that I will film at my house. This solves the problem as it means that the filming will not be pushed back. Therefore, I will remain on schedule for my media coursework.

Task J - Location Recce Shots

The following shots are ones of where the filming of my music video will take place.

First Location: A driveway.
These shots show the driveway where the first shots of the music video will take place. I took the pictures from different angles to figure out how the location will look on camera when I film the shots for the music video.

Second Location: A bedroom.
This location will feature in shots after the shots taken on the driveway. In the video, the main character will be in the bedroom when she is unpacking her suitcase.

Third Location: A park.
This is the location where most of the filming of the music video will take place. After the first chorus, the majority of the music video takes place in this park. Some of the flashbacks will also take place here.

Task I - Costume Shots

These are some pictures that are from the Internet about what I want the costumes in the music video to look like.

Costume 1:

This outfit will be worn by the actor throughout the majority of the video. The light colours suggest a theme of optimism, which is the prominent theme throughout the music video.

Costume 2:

This will be worn in a flashback of when the actor in the music video was still in the relationship he has just left. The dark colours of the outfit suggest that the actor is angry. The shot that this costume will be present in has a theme of anger running through it.

Task H - Storyboard

Task G Part 2 - Draft of Each Ancillary Text Feedback

This is the feedback that has been given for my digipak draft and my magazine advert draft.

Task G - Draft of Each Ancillary Text With Photos Off the Internet to Plan What Kind of Photography is Needed

Draft of Digipak:

This draft of my digipak is to show what it could like if I use this type of photography.
I like the pictures of the sets of hands as it looks as if they are letting go of one another. The close up of the hands is something that I would like to incorporate into my digipak. I like the shots of the young man with the guitar as in both pictures he looks as if he is daydreaming, possibly about his ex-girlfriend. I like how the shots manage to capture the essence of that.
On the back cover, as well as the track listing, there will also be a bar-code, the record company logo and some extra details about the album and artist. This will appear on the final draft of the digipak.

Magazine Advert:

This is the draft of my magazine advert. This draft shows me where the pictures and text will go once the advert is finished. The shot used is also used on the inside cover of the album and shows a young man with a guitar, daydreaming. I used this shot as it conveys what the theme of the album is and that is a mixture of love and heartache. There is also a small image of the front of the digipak on the advert. This is to show the audience that there is a relationship between the advert and the digipak.
